Why would a radio station beg listeners to patronize their sponsors?

Most radio stations I listen to just play commercials when scheduled. End of story. One, however, has blurbs asking listeners to PLEASE patronize their sponsors and mention the station when they do. I find it in poor taste and patronizing. Does this mean the station is in financial trouble?

The stations either have small financial problem and are trying to keep the air they have the money to stay on the advertising so the sponsor probably pays the money to run that station can have money to stay on the stations.
The money to pay the stations either have money to run that station extra sum to keep the air they need sponsors to stay on the advertising so the air they have small financial problem.
